GlobalData’s UK SME Insurance Survey series has found that an increasing number of SMEs feel they should play an active role in supporting their employees’ mental health. Medium-sized businesses felt the strongest about this, with the percentage of those strongly agreeing rising to over a third in 2019, increasing by 2.3 percentage points in just a year.

The mental health of employees is gaining increasing focus due to the pandemic, as the stresses caused by changes to individuals’ work-life balances, the inability to socialise as before, and uncertainty surrounding the security of their employment grow. This creates an opportunity for the insurance industry to engage more with SME customers through the provision of employee benefit schemes that are tailored for this very purpose.

SMEs clearly felt strongly about the role they should play in helping their employees with their mental wellbeing before the spread of COVID-19, and this sentiment should only grow given the increased challenges. Employee benefit providers should begin to direct their efforts towards the provision of services that are focused on an employee’s mental wellbeing, particularly as the provision of care in this area has been disrupted with health services prioritising the treatment of those directly impacted by COVID-19.
