GlobalData surveying indicates that over half of industry insiders believe generative AI applications will cause an increase in cyberattacks. Meanwhile, Indian health insurer Star Health reportedly fell victim to a data breach via Telegram chatbots.

According to GlobalData’s poll run on Verdict Media sites, which was conducted in Q2 2023 and had over 200 responses, 58.5% of industry insiders believe that generative AI applications will cause an increase in cyberattacks. This reflects growing concerns within the industry about the vulnerabilities AI introduces. This is particularly true in areas such as data security, where AI could be exploited to develop more sophisticated hacking techniques or assist in phishing attacks through automated and more human-like interaction models.

These concerns are further highlighted by recent high-profile data breaches, such as the one involving Star Health Insurance. In August 2024, the company experienced a major breach in which hackers exploited Telegram chatbots to leak sensitive information from more than 31 million customers. The stolen data—which included medical records, billing details, and identification documents—reportedly totalled 7.24 terabytes. This incident underscores the growing threat posed by cybercriminals using advanced technologies, such as generative AI, to exploit vulnerabilities and marks a significant shift in the evolving landscape of cybercrime. For insurers, this growing threat means that conventional cybersecurity strategies may no longer suffice. The failure to adopt AI-resistant defences and invest in adaptive security measures could expose companies to breaches with severe financial and reputational consequences, as seen in the recent Star Health incident.
