Reinsurer AXA XL has named Simon Rees as its chief underwriting officer for North America Programmes, effective 1 April 2025.

Rees, who currently holds the position of chief reserving actuary for the Americas, will report to Tim Whisler, Wholesale Solutions, Americas, in the new role.

In 2017, Rees started at AXA XL in London, leading reinsurance reserving for the International and London region.

He took on the role of deputy chief actuary in the Americas after moving to New York in 2021, followed by a promotion to chief actuary in 2022.

With more than 20 years of experience in the industry, Rees worked with variety of businesses, from start-ups to large multinationals, and is known for achieving financial outcomes.

Whisler said: “Simon’s extensive experience and skill set will further enhance our capabilities in the specialty programme market. His expertise will be instrumental in strengthening our existing partnerships and evaluating and onboarding new programmes as we focus on growth in this important segment of our business.”

He further noted: “Programmes are a vital segment of our industry and help businesses solve for unique challenges through customised solutions delivered by programme administrators. Under Simon’s leadership, we look forward to continued collaboration and growth in the specialty programmes market.”

Earlier this month, AXA XL, a division of AXA specialising in property and casualty (P&C) and specialty risk, appointed Ana Dores as country manager for Iberia, effective 1 March, subject to regulatory approval.
