Zurich North America has revealed plans to broaden its middle market business across the US, capitalising on four years of “double-digit growth”.

The expansion aims to enhance its property and casualty offerings for mid-size companies by adding more than 100 underwriting roles in the south, west, mid-west and east.

Zurich’s US Middle Market (USMM) business operates by industry vertical, delivering property, casualty, financial lines and specialties coverage.

The solutions are designed for mid-size businesses in various sectors including construction, technology and life sciences, complemented by insurance and risk engineering services.

Lisa Diers has been appointed head of onboarding & development for Middle Market.

Having worked at Zurich for 28 years, Diers was head of underwriting quality and compliance for Middle Market and recently improved the USMM underwriter trainee programme.

Set up in 2020, the USMM business unit at Zurich North America introduced solutions such as an admitted primary products liability policy for life sciences companies and My Zurich Broker Concierge.

It also launched Smart Renewals for account renewals.

Additionally, Zurich Resilience Solutions is also growing its team with new risk engineer positions to further support middle market businesses.

Zurich North America head of US Middle Market Alex Wells said: “Our Middle Market business formed as a distinct unit at Zurich five years ago, and the success we have had since then validates three of our driving principles – being as close to our customers and brokers as possible, offering them industry-specialised insights from underwriters and risk engineers who know and understand their businesses, and fulfilling their needs holistically through Zurich’s wide range of offerings, global capabilities and 153 years of financial strength. Investing in this next expansion is the latest way we are executing on our principles.”

Zurich USMM chief operating officer John Mizzi stated: “We recently created a new role, Head of Onboarding & Development, to provide comprehensive training and a supportive environment. We also are creating cohorts of new joiners who start at the same time so they have a strong internal network from day one.”

Last month, Zurich North America launched a new specialties business unit, consolidating its construction, surety and financial lines businesses, and appointed Kelly Kinzer as its head.
