Lockton Re, the reinsurance division of Lockton, has appointed Tom Meyer as the new head of the specialty division, succeeding Paul Upton, who will transition to the role of chairman of the division.

Meyer served as managing director of specialty at Gallagher Re from 2023.

His background in the industry includes roles such as CEO at Chord Re, which he joined in 2017 as chief underwriting officer, and leadership positions at Aspen Re and Allianz Re, as well as time spent at Willis Re.

Meyer’s expertise spans reinsurance underwriting, broking and management, with a particular focus on cross-class specialty knowledge.

Commenting on his appointment, Lockton Re International CEO Keith Harrison said: “We are delighted to welcome Tom to the business. Over the last five years, we have been thrilled with the growth and capabilities that we have built in our specialty lines division.

“It is great to add Tom as further bench strength as our specialty division continues to expand at a great pace.”

Meyer added: “I could not be more enthusiastic about the opportunity at Lockton Re and the high calibre of my new colleagues, who have built a reputation of being instrumental partners to clients in many niche and complex specialty classes. I look forward to working with Paul and the team and being part of such a great culture and growth story.”

Earlier this month, Lockton Re appointed Eric Paire as head of the capital advisory practice in London.

Paire joins from Aon, where he was head of capital advisory for nearly seven years.

Last month, Lockton launched a new specialised insurance facility named BESS Lock to streamline coverage for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.

The facility aims to provide “competitive” pricing and features a full-follow facility with a capacity of up to $315m (£244.03m), supporting one of a panel of BESS market insurers.
