Commercial property insurance group FM has broken ground on the FM Science and Technology Centre, Europe, a new facility based in Luxembourg to support scientific research.

The facility will promote risk mitigation strategies among clients and stakeholders throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

This move is expected to bring FM’s engineering expertise and science-based solutions for emerging risks closer to its EMEA clientele.

The project is due to be completed in 2027.

The establishment is said to be an expansion of FM’s base in Luxembourg, which has been serving as the group’s European headquarters since 2017.

The centre will primarily focus on research related to climate hazards, industrial technology and cyber risk loss prevention solutions.

It aims to foster a collaborative environment where FM clients, prospects, colleagues and partners can engage in training through its laboratories.

FM chairman and CEO Malcolm Roberts said: “The FM Science and Technology Centre, Europe, represents a significant milestone in FM’s journey as we increase our support and resources for our clients in EMEA and bring new research capabilities to a key market. Through our new state-of-the-art facility, we will complement our existing research framework and deliver FM’s message of resilience to even more clients and partners.”

Roberts added: “We are proud to increase our presence in Luxembourg and the broader EMEA region. As FM grows around the world, we adapt and integrate local standards, practices and knowledge into our platform. This inclusivity not only enriches our understanding but also strengthens our relationships with policyholders, partners and communities worldwide.”

FM’s research and education facilities across the globe include the FM Research Campus in West Glocester, Rhode Island; the FM Science and Technology Centre, Asia-Pacific, in Singapore; and the FM Science and Technology Centre, Americas, in Norwood, Massachusetts.

Plans are in place to open additional research facilities at the Norwood campus in 2026.

Earlier this month, FM announced the availability of its insurance policy for renewable energy operations in the EMEA region.
