The growing adoption of smart home technology is enabling consumers to both spot damage early and reduce its impact by integrating these advanced features into their homes. Insurers are increasingly recognising the value of smart home devices and are beginning to incorporate them into their policies. For example, US insurer Nationwide has launched an initiative in collaboration with water solutions provider Phyn to offer discounted leak detection solutions to its policyholders. However, consumer uptake of smart devices such as water leak detection devices remains limited.

As per GlobalData’s 2024 Emerging Trends Insurance Consumer Survey,  just 13.6% of respondents reported having a water leak detection device installed in their home, with an additional 12% expressing the intention to add one within the next two years. This low uptake is particularly alarming given the potential for significant damage caused by leaking or burst pipes.

Water leak detection systems play a crucial role in identifying damaged pipes early, thereby preventing extensive water damage, mould growth, and damp conditions in homes. According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), without these systems in place, it can take weeks or even months to detect leaks, leading to costly repairs and extensive damage. The ABI emphasizes that implementing water leak detection systems is a win-win situation for both insurers and consumers. By proactively addressing leaks, insurers can reduce the frequency and severity of claims, while homeowners can protect their properties from the devastating effects of water damage.

According to a study by Phyn, homes equipped with water leak detection devices are 99% less likely to experience non-weather-related leak claims. Through its partnership with Phyn, Nationwide offers its customers a 15% discount on these innovative products. This collaboration will help enhance risk management for homeowners, while potentially reducing the likelihood of costly claims related to water damage for insurers. Going forward, it is likely that more insurers will seek to adopt similar smart home technology initiatives to enhance risk management and improve overall customer satisfaction.
