Over 80% of employees value pension, health, legal and protection services – ahead of arguably ‘softer’ benefits, such as gym membership (62%) and counselling services (70%) says research from Epoq.

This was the case across all age groups, aside from the 18 – 24-year-old category where gym membership appears in joint second place at 92%, alongside critical illness insurance, according to Epoq, which is a provider of online legal document services

The research was carried out by Opinium in May 2017 – on behalf of Epoq and surveyed 2,002 nationally representative UK adults.

Epoq Commercial Director, Andrew Walker, commented: “Our findings indicate that the majority of employees are looking to employers to offer the kind of benefits strategy that educates, enables and empowers them to protect their future wellbeing.

“Against this backdrop, giving individuals access to the type of benefits that will help them protect their interests – such as pensions, health, protection, legal advice and documents – will clearly be a welcome move.”

The services most valued overall when provided as an employee benefit, according to Epoq’s survey:

  1. Pension (95%)
  2. Flexible working (91%)
  3. Health/medical insurance (89%)
  4. Legal advice (87%) & life insurance (87%)
  5. Critical illness insurance (86%)
  6. Income protection insurance (85%)

  1. Legal documents, such as a Will (83%)
  2. Financial advice (76%)
  3. Counselling service (70%)
  4. Gym membership (62%)
  5. Childcare vouchers (41%)
