Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has opened a new office in Madrid, Spain.

Besides, the firm appointed Ignacio Almazan as the country manager for Spain.

BHSI UK and Europe president Chris Colahan said: “Putting down roots in Spain enhances our ability to service both local customers and multinationals in Europe.

“Ignacio has extensive experience in the Spanish marketplace and we are excited to have him leading our effort to build our local presence and relationships.”

Ignacio has had 20 years of experience in the insurance industry. For the previous ten years, he has worked at RSA Spain as the country manager.

He also worked at Willis Spain, Aon Spain, and at Royal & Sun Alliance Spain.

Initially, BHSI will underwrite property, casualty, financial lines, construction and engineering insurance. The firm expects to increase its product range in the country eventually.

In March this year, BHSI introduced professional liability cover for asset managers and funds in the UK and Ireland.

In January, the company expanded its North American transactional liability insurance business into the UK and Europe.

It also unveiled plans to expand into the property construction insurance market in the UK and Ireland. This venture will be led by Simeon Seamer, who previously served at SCOR Global P&C.
