BMS Group has appointed Ryan Phillips as the director and practice leader for Africa, effective March 2025.

His scope of work will cover the entire African continent, with a focus on expanding the company’s regional presence, particularly in collaboration with the team serving South African clients.

Based in London, Phillips returns to BMS after a stint as the group CEO of Afro Asian Insurance Services, where he achieved a 300% revenue increase.

His 13 years of industry experience following his initial 12-year stint at BMS includes a role as chief operating officer at Matrix Insurance Brokers, which was later acquired by Howden in 2020.

Phillips will report to BMS director Paul Galvin.

In his new role, he will support clients across Africa in various lines including property, political violence, terrorism, energy, financial lines and cyber.

Galvin said: “Ryan will be a great addition to BMS. His deep knowledge of the African market landscape and his established international network, as well as strong relationships within the London market, will be invaluable to the business as we grow in this territory. Providing a dedicated resource to a region so rich in opportunity is an important step for BMS, and we are confident Ryan is the right person to lead this initiative.”

Last month, BMS Re reappointed a former Guy Carpenter executive as CEO of their Latin America and Caribbean division.

Anthony Mirabal is based in Miami and reports to BMS International CEO Nick Gillet.
