Insurtech By Miles has teamed up with Redtail Telematics to launch an email campaign to alert customers when their vehicles’ batteries are low.
The initiative was launched after data analysed by Redtail revealed there was a risk to drivers of dead car batteries due to inactivity. This is of particular relevance during the times of lockdown and Covid-19.

By GlobalDataRetail reprogrammed their black boxes in situ and they send battery status information to its data warehouse. Then, information is translated into alerts by the insurer that can be sent out via SMS or email.
Callum Rimmer, CTO and co-founder of By Miles, said: “People have enough to worry about at the moment, so the last thing drivers need is a flat car battery. We’re always looking for ways to improve our service to make the lives of drivers easier, and insurance is just one part of that. With help from Redtail, we’ve been able to offer a helping hand during lockdown.”
Dr Colin Smithers, Redtail CEO, added: “Telematics is not just about saving money on insurance as the By Miles’ launch of the battery life email alert illustrates. Redtail is a one-stop- shop telematics company serving insurance, fleet and OEM customers, and so it is easy for us to re-program our boxes over the air and modify the data warehouse functionality to create these custom alerts, empowering insurers to deliver additional benefits to their customers.”
Redtail is a telematics service provider to the usage-based insurance, automotive, fleet tracking, and stolen vehicle recovery sectors. Its devices and services are used by Admiral, By Miles, ingenie, TRACKER UK, LoJack , CalAmp, Concirrus, Acorn, Ford Motors and Jaguar Land Rover, among others.
In December 2019, By Miles launched, with Tesla, the world’s first connected car insurance policy.
The policy takes information from Teslas and uses information regarding the distance driven to price insurance. It does not use information on how the car is driven. Furthermore, it is the first car insurance policy in the world to take data from the car without any form of black box. The policy was created with insurer La Parisienne Assurances (backed by Swiss Re).
