Teachers Life, a Canadian educator-owned fraternal insurer, has appointed Mark Cummings as its new president and CEO.
Cummings will succeed Doug Baker, who has been president and CEO of Teachers Life since 2006. He will take the charge on 1 October 2017, and will be based in Toronto.
Prior to joining Teachers Life, Cummings worked as CEO for Cummings & Company Consulting. Earlier, he was with Scotiabank, where he held the position of president and CEO of Scotia Life Insurance Company.
Before Scotiabank, Cummings worked in leadership roles at RBC and the Canada Life Insurance Company in wealth management, creditor insurance and human resources.
Cummings said: “I am tremendously honoured to join Teachers Life and serve our member base. The opportunity to lead a proud organization with almost 80 years of history, a track record of innovation and growth, and an incredibly talented team is very motivating.
“I believe there is an appetite for quality life insurance in Canada that is supported by both strong business acumen and a firm commitment to community-based values.
“Teachers Life is in a unique position to deliver on this, with its deep connection to the community and fraternal values, combined with an advanced commitment to innovation. It is truly an exciting place to be.”
