Insurance group Howden has named Nagarajan Girishankar as the chair of its reinsurance unit in India.

In the new role, Girishankar role will work on expanding Howden’s presence in the region, particularly in lines such as oil and energy, marine and property.

Girishankar has more than 40 years of experience in the insurance broking industry with expertise spanning sectors including property, marine, oil and gas energy, casualty and financial lines.

Before joining Howden, Girishankar held the position of director at Pioneer Insurance & Reinsurance Brokers for five years.

His career also includes more than two decades at KM Dastur Reinsurance Brokers and a three-year tenure as general manager at Jubilee Insurance, following an 11-year period at the New India Assurance.

Commenting on the new role, Girishankar said: “I am honoured to join Howden. It is an esteemed and pedigreed organisation and I will do my best to contribute to its growth and success.”

In August 2023, Howden appointed Amit Agarwal as CEO of Howden India.

As of 2023, Howden India, which received its trading licence in 2004, employed more than 300 people across seven cities.

In 2022, the company received approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India to increase its stake in Howden India to 100%.

The Indian unit specialises in areas such as agriculture, aviation, health and benefits, liability and specialty, property and construction, and reinsurance.

In December 2024, Howden named Rohan Bhappu as the deputy CEO of Howden Asia, with his tenure set to commence in June this year.
