Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM), a division of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, has appointed Daniel Unstad as its new head of Nordics.

Unstad, with more than 25 years of experience in insurance and surety, will be based in Oslo, Norway.

He will report to Roland Richter, EMEA head of Surety, regional executive and senior vice-president, and Rob Groenen, LSM Benelux & Nordics general manager.

He will be responsible for shaping the “strategic direction” of LSM in the Nordic region, leading the development of a combined surety and insurance team.

Additionally, he will establish Oslo as LSM’s underwriting and distribution hub for the Nordic markets.

Groenen said: “I am extremely pleased to welcome Daniel to this highly significant new role. His extensive experience and expertise will help deliver a powerful combined insurance and surety proposition to the Nordic markets. This will help drive our growth ambitions while effectively addressing the rising needs of our clients across the region.”

Unstad will retain his previous role as Liberty’s head of surety in Norway.

Prior to Liberty, he served as COO at MGA House of Guarantees, which was purchased by Liberty Mutual in 2024.

Earlier this month, LSM partnered with Baobab Insurance to launch an e-crime insurance product designed for small and medium-sized enterprises.

This solution aims to safeguard businesses against digital fraud risks including CEO fraud and deepfakes.

LSM operates approximately 60 offices across 20 countries, providing a diverse range of insurance solutions.

Its portfolio includes aviation, casualty, commercial motor, construction, crime and fraud, cyber, energy and marine insurance.
