London-based speciality re/insurer Markel International has commenced writing business from its Mumbai office in India.

The office will be led by Deepika Mathur, who has spent around two decades in the Indian insurance sector gathering valuable experience on the sector.

She joins from HDFC Ergo, where she most recently oversaw the casualty and financial lines business in the capacity of an executive vice president.

“We are now writing business in India and are very pleased with the response we have had from the domestic market, which affirms the demand from local Indian insurers for specialised products like those offered by Markel,” Mathur stated.

The firm said that it provides insurers in India with specialist facultative reinsurance. Furthermore, it covers multiple commercial classes such as marine, energy, contingency, as well as professional and financial risks.

Managing director for Asia Matt Cannock said: “Establishing the office in Mumbai has been a complex undertaking involving Markel teams around the world, the effort put in by everybody has been truly inspiring.

“Deepika Mathur will be instrumental in providing Markel with access to the local reinsurance market. We are looking forward to servicing our existing relationships better and to starting many more new ones.”
