US insurer Markel has appointed Wanshi Lin as the head of Singapore, a newly created role.
She will be responsible for managing the underwriting team and driving business planning and market engagement on the company’s Lloyd’s Singapore platform.
The company stated that the creation of a new leadership role in Singapore is part of Markel’s focus on expanding its Asia-Pacific operations and underwriting capabilities.
In her new role, Lin will report directly to Asia-Pacific managing director Christian Stobbs.
Commenting on the appointment, Stobbs said: “Singapore is our largest marketplace in the region for specialty products, and I am confident that, under her leadership, we will further enhance our relationships with brokers and clients while building on the strong momentum achieved in recent years.”
Lin joined Markel in 2018 as an assistant underwriter – marine and was promoted to senior underwriter – marine in 2023.
Prior to this, Lin served as assistant vice-president at Marsh Singapore.
Asia-Pacific chief underwriting officer Kevin Leung added: “It is a delight to see Wanshi progress to take on this role. Her extensive experience, strategic insight and understanding of the Singapore market will be instrumental in strengthening our commitment to providing underwriting excellence to this important regional hub.”
This follows the appointment of Grant Smith earlier this month to head the Transport and Logistics team.
Smith will focus on expanding market share and spearheading product development initiatives.
Markel operates under the umbrella of Markel Group and is known for its specialty insurance offerings.
The company’s divisions include Markel Specialty, Markel International and Markel Global Reinsurance.
