Pacific Life Re has announced a number of appointments within its protection business and boosting leadership in the Asia Pacific region.
Tyson Johnston, the current managing director of the Australian business and head of global protection strategy, has been promoted to the role of managing director, protection, Asia Pacific & global strategy. He will now guide Pacific Life Re’s growth in Asia Pacific, building on Australia.
Furthermore, Martyn Gilling, the current head of client solutions, Australia will take on many of Johnston’s previous responsibilities in a new role as general manager, protection, Australia.
The Australian protection business, now led by Gilling, and the Asian protection business, which continues to be led by Vasan Errakiah, will both report to Johnston.
Andrew Gill, global head of protection, commented: “Over the last 7 years, Tyson has demonstrated excellent strategic leadership and we’re confident he will drive our growth in the Asia Pacific region. I am also very pleased to be in a position to be able to promote from within and utilise the deep experience and talent that both Martyn and Matthew offer.”
In June 2024, Malaysian Re and Pacific Life Re extended their memorandum of understanding (MoU) for offering sustainable (re)takaful solutions.

Since the inception of this partnership, Malaysian Re Retakaful Division (MRRD), a unit of Malaysian Re has utilised Pacific Life Re’s experience and technological solutions from UnderwriteMe to enhance family (re)takaful offerings.
UnderwriteMe is a fully owned subsidiary of Pacific Life Re.
