Securian Financial has forged an exclusive alliance with MASA, an emergency medical transportation benefit service, to provide ambulance coverage.
This benefit is an addition to Securian’s group accident insurance product available to workplaces across the US.
Securian Financial, through its partnership with MASA, is claimed to be the first to fully cover out-of-pocket expenses for both ground and air ambulance rides in any medical emergency, not just accidents.
MASA reports that the average cost for a ground ambulance ride is $2,000, while air medical transport averages $69,000 per flight.
Health insurance may cover ambulance services with in-network providers, but a 2023 study by Fair Health found that 59% of ground ambulance rides were out-of-network in 2022.
Furthermore, the No Surprises Act, which protects patients from unexpected medical bills, does not address ground ambulance transportation.
Securian Financial group life and voluntary benefits second vice-president Lydia Jilek said: “By offering a group accident insurance product with enhanced emergency medical transport benefits, this partnership brings best-in-class protection to employees.
“With more than half a century of experience in protecting members from the high costs of emergency transport, MASA is a proven addition to our offerings and will help us deliver innovative, effective employee benefits solutions.”
Supplemental health insurance benefits, offered through employers, can help mitigate some of the financial strain.
These benefits are designed to complement major medical insurance, which often comes with high deductibles and co-pays.
Cash benefit payments from supplemental health insurance can be used for various expenses including child care, meals, travel costs and lost income during medical treatment or recovery.
Critical illness, hospital indemnity and accident insurance are the most common types of supplemental health insurance benefits provided by employers.
In January this year, the Canadian Automobile Association teamed up with Securian Canada to launch a range of insurance offerings for more than seven million members.
